Massage for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is really difficult. By definition, it never really goes away or at least it lasts a very long time. There are a number of different causes of chronic pain, and event more different medical conditions that could be involved. Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Myofascial Pain Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, the list goes on.

Here's the key for how massage can help. Massage reduces stress, improves sleep, and reduces awareness/perception of pain. Three basic things that have significant impacts when dealing with issues around chronic pain.

Living with chronic pain is stressful and it frequently results in depression. Massage reducing stress and the stress response means that someone living with chronic pain can have a better quality of life.

With the reduction in stress, and with other mechanisms as well, massage improves the quality of sleep. Some chronic pain conditions, including Fibromyalgia, are primarily the result of  or are strongly influenced by disrupted sleep patterns. With improved sleep comes an improvement in the medical condition. It isn't a cure, but an improvement.

Finally, reducing the awareness or perception of pain. Someone who receives regular massage may find that the pain they are feeling isn't as intense as it was before, it's not as consuming. The result is that the pain may still be there, but it's easier to function.
